About the Break

Banzai Pipeline is widely regarded as the most dangerous and spectacular surf break in the world. Located off Ehukai Beach Park on Oahu's North Shore, the Pipeline produces powerful, hollow waves that break over a sharp, shallow coral reef — creating the iconic barreling waves that have defined professional surfing for over half a century.

First surfed in the early 1960s by legendary watermen like Eddie Aikau and the Butchart brothers, Pipeline quickly became the proving ground for the world's best surfers. The break consists of three distinct reefs — First Reef, Second Reef, and Third Reef — each producing waves of increasing size and power during the winter swell season from November through February.

Pipeline hosts the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and is the ultimate test of courage and skill in big-wave riding. Its shallow reef, powerful currents, and consistently perfect barrels make it both a mecca for elite surfers and one of the most hazardous lineups on the planet. Respect for the ocean here is not optional — it is essential.
